Ponds, Pumps & Filters...

Large Waterfall Installations & Arrangements

large waterfall installationA curtain of water tumbling down to form a waterfall can have varying widths and heights.

Arrangements frequently combine fountains with waterfalls.

A waterfall is a good way to add oxygen to water. It should borne in mind that waterfalls can be quite noisy.

When a large waterfall in installed in a fish pond it would be a good idea to run the biofilter off a separate smaller pump in order to save running costs if the waterfall is not needed... the smaller pumps feeds the biofilter.

Important: Design Requirements...

1. Trough should be adequately dimensioned

2. Lip and weir edge should be kept clean

3. Avoid siting under trees (leaves and twigs)

4. Ensure pump is correctly sized.

Key to the sketch below:..

A: Overflow Reservoir B: Adjusting Rail C: Water Distributor
D: Weir Edge E: Delivery Pipe F: Drain Pipe
G: Overflow Drain H: Check (Isolation) Valve I: Flow Control Valve
J: Cover Grating K: Submersible Pump

The most important considerations are generalised in this sketch below. Taking short cuts in these larger installations will result in major disappointment and many hassles. Always be aware of safety considerations when installing in public places.

The design of the adjusting rail and weir are critical to achieving the flow shown in the picture and sketch.
